Original outline color. Panels at top with plans of cities, at sides with costumes of the people of the continent. Margins present but folded back. Very good condition. First edition, with the imprint of G. Humble at the lower right.          $3,250.00

2)    (World) Moll, H., A New Map of the World According to Wrights Alias Mercators Projection &c. Drawn from the Newest and the Most Exact Observations .... London: 1708. 55x94 cm. Outline color, folded, excellent condition, weakness along two folds. Interesting features include California as an island and the western coastline of Australia. Southeastern Australia is not delineated at all. A wonderful early 18th century map of the world.      $2,750.00

3)    (Massachusetts) Hammond, Benjamin, 6 Manuscript Maps of Lands on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. n.p.: c. 1740. Various sizes, all small folio or less. This is a lot of 6 manuscript maps of various sizes for lots of land in southeastern Massachusetts in the middle of the 18th century. At least two of the maps are for property in Cape Cod; one is for land in Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, owned by Abraham Chase. 4 of the 6 maps were drawn by Benjamin Hammond (b. 1673, d.1747), a noted surveyor who lived in Rochester, Mass. One of the maps is dated 1775 and was signed by his son Barzillai. Hammond's father Benjamin arrived in Boston in 1634. The family produced many notable figures of 18th century Massachusetts.               $1,500.00

4)    (Canada) [Blunt, Edmund?], [Coastal Chart of Nova Scotia]. [New York?]: c. 1795. 52x85 cm. Unrecorded blue-back sea   chart of the coast of much of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Ocean to its southeast. Shows Cape Sable in the southwest, Mines Channel in the northwest, Forked Harbor in the northeast, and Sable Island Bank in the southeast. Generally good condition, with small tears at the left and right edges, discoloration from rolling at the left edge. The style of printing leads to a strong conclusion that this map is American, and a very early publication from Blunt, though there are no identifying marks or imprints on the map. It is far more primitive and less polished than British maps of the period, resembling more the British charts published around 1720. The date of the map is set by the presence of a lighthouse on Lighthouse Island outside Halifax Harbor which existed for only a short time before burning down. No other copies located.                              $6,500.00

5)     (Philadelphia) Barralet, John James, View of the Water Works at Centre Square Philadelphia. Philadelphia: c. 1810. 30x51 cm. First state of this early print in Philadelphia. Fine condition, with only two very short tears. Stipple engraving by Cornelius Tiebout. Barralet was an Irish artist who came to Philadelphia about 1795. This is among the finest examples of his work known. This water works was located in the center of Philadelphia, at what is now Broad and Market Streets, the site of Philadelphia City Hall. The print is dated by the statue by Benjamin Rush seen here, Nymph of the Schuylkill, which was erected in 1809 and the smoke billowing from the building. The steam engine inside was shut down in 1815.             $2,500.00

The following ten United States maps are all from Mathew Carey’s General Atlas, published in Philadelphia in 1814. These particular maps come from one of the extremely scarce copies which was issued with full color. Most copies seen had outline color only. No copies of the full color edition appear in auction records of the past 30 years, while many outline color copies appear. All of these maps have been restored, with modern archival backing. Other flaws to individual maps are described below. These full color maps are now among the scarcest of Carey’s cartographic works, all of which are now in high demand.

6)    (Delaware) Carey, Mathew, Delaware. Philadelphia: 1814. 40.8x23.1 cm. Very good condition. Margins are fairly thin, with chipping at top right corner and edges. Very light staining.                                          $400.00

7)    (Louisiana) Carey, Mathew, Louisiana. Philadelphia: 1814. 31.5x35.9 cm. Light chipping at edges. One tear, restored, at top right. Minor soiling at bottom left. There is no coloring to delineate the various parishes.       $700.00

8)    (Maryland) Carey, Mathew, Maryland. Philadelphia: 1814. 24.5x34.8 cm. Light wear, staining. Partially split and repaired along center fold. Staining along extreme edge of margin, well outside of plate line.        $600.00

9)    (Massachusetts) Carey, Mathew, The State of Massachusetts. Philadelphia: 1814. 32x46 cm. Light wear. Bright, crisp color. Staining in margins, virtually entirely outside of the plate line.                             $500.00

10) (Mississippi/Alabama) Carey, Mathew, Mississippi Territory. Philadelphia: 1814. 30.9x35.8 cm. Very good condition. Mild tears and staining in the margins, which are very wide. The only color in the areas which became Alabama and Mississippi is around the perimeter.                            $1,000.00

11)  (New Hampshire) Carey, Mathew, The State of New Hampshire, Compiled Chiefly from Actual Surveys by Samuel Lewis, 1813. Philadelphia: 1814. 44.6x28.2 cm. Considerable staining and discoloration, particularly in the margins and in the top third of the map. In spite of this, this is still quite a representative copy of this map, in the exceedingly scarce original color.             $250.00

12)  (North America) Carey, Mathew, A New and Accurate Map of North America, from the Best Authorities. Philadelphia: 1814. 38x30 cm. Chipping and light staining in margins, some damage near center fold. Wheat 314.       $350.00

The following eleven maps are also from the colored issue of Carey’s 1814 General Atlas, but all have been archivally encapsulated in nearly transparent Japan paper. This paper is professionally removable with no great difficulty.

16)   (England) Carey, Mathew, An Accurate Map of England and Wales with the Principal Roads from the Best Authorities.  36x32 cm. Very wide margins, light soiling along center fold.                                   $300.00

26)  (World) Carey, Mathew, A Chart of the World, According to Mercator's Projection. 36x46 cm. Some staining and very light chipping, most apparent in the left and bottom margins. 27)   (Europe) Brue, H., Carte Encyprotype de L'Europe. Paris: 1816. 150x110.4 cm. Wall map in very good condition, backed with linen, with original rods. Several short tears repaired. Age toning. A superb copy of this important New York State map, with only very scattered light foxing. Eddy's map was the standard map of the state in use at the time of the building of the Erie Canal. It was surpassed 11 years later, after the canal was finished, by David Burr's map and atlas of the state. Streeter 902.       $2,500.00

30)   (Connecticut) Barnum, H. L., A Map of Bridgeport. Bridgeport: 1824. 43x53.5 cm. Very scarce (Not in Thompson) early map of Bridgeport. It is in fair condition, though generally legible. When we got it, it was virtually pitch black. After restoration, it has modern rebacking and is quite light, though the paper is now thin enough that the watermarks show through. The names of the landowners are still readable, though with some difficulty owing to the very fine engraving employed initially. An important map of this Connecticut city.    $650.00

31)  (Atlantic Ocean) Victoria, Don Guadalupe, Carta General del Oceano Atlantico Septentrional .... Mexico City: 1825. 57x91 cm. 32)  (California) Victoria, Don Guadalupe, Plano del Puerto de San Diego de la California Septentrional. Mexico City: 1825. 47.2x33 cm. Map of San Diego Harbor. Uncolored. Good detail. Fine condition. Hales also did maps of the City of Boston and the area around Boston. Original box and label. The box is broken along several of its folds but all parts but one narrow side are still present. This is among the earliest generation of American county maps, along with John Melish’s maps of some of the counties of Pennsylvania. Essex county includes the towns of Gloucester, Salem, Newburyport and Haverhill, among many others. The map was engraved by J. V. N. Throop and dated January 19th, 1825.         $1,250.00

Aside from coloring, this map is textually almost identical to the next item listed here, though a close examination reveals the addition, on this map, of a proposed canal along the Tioga River in Tioga County, a proposed railroad from Harrisburg to Chambersburg, the Ohio Railroad in Maryland, and the naming of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal along the Potomac River in Maryland. There may also be other additions which have escaped our scrutiny.       $350.00

47)  (Pennsylvania) Finley, Anthony, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: 1829. 32x47 cm. Folding map in original leather folder, excellent condition. This was one of four maps which also appeared as a double-page map in later issues of Finley's General Atlas. 1829 was the first year these double-page maps were included. Engraved by J. H. Young. This is an early issue of this map which does not highlight the canals in color and does not name many of the waterways, including the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. No land area is damaged, but some ocean depths are lost. There is other wear and very light repaired damage at that end. The rest of the map is fine for a blue-backed chart which usually are found in poor condition. This map was an update by the noted Blunt firm of the survey by Cahoone & Fosdick which was issued between 1805 and 1827. Guthorn p. 65 “A much improved chart of Long Island Sound”, Phillips p.363.           $4,500.00

The print depicts Christ rising, having emerged from his tomb, with soldiers recoiling in awe in the foreground. Records of Robinson's business indicate that his salesmen sold 5995 maps, but only 533 prints, which bore his imprint. (See Ristow p. 272.)                                        $1,250.00

52)   (New Jersey) Beach, E[phraim], Map of the New Jersey Rail Road, Surveyed Under the Direction of E. Beach. [Newark]: 1832. 50x40 cm. Map removed from “A Circular to the Stockholder of the N.J. Folding map in very good condition, with two short crude tape repairs at the left side of the map. The scarce first edition of what proved to be a long-lived series of maps. Issued with statistical chart bound in, before text accompaniment began in 1836. This is the first wholly original publication by Mitchell who began map publishing in 1831 by selling maps and atlases first by issued Anthony Finley. Also important is that this first edition of the Travelers Guide was probably the first American cartographic work to employ steel engraving. A keystone work in American cartography.
