1)       (Arctic) Blaeu, Willem , Regiones Sub Polo Arctico.  Amsterdam:  c. 1639 44x56 cm. c. 1650. Outline color. Dutch text on verso. Two small stains in margin at bottom left. Dedication at left side has 3 lines underlined in a contemporary hand. Second state. A beautiful early map of the northern part of the world, showing all of Newfoundland and Hudson Bay, Greenland, Iceland, northern Norway, Finland and Russia                                                                     $1,500.00

1a) (Antarctic) Jansson, Joannes, Polus Antarcticus. Amsterdam: c. 1639. 43.4x49.2 cm.  Decorative map of the Antarctic and southern areas of Africa, South America and Australia below the Tropic of Capricorn. Vignettes at corners around the map have bright contemporary hand-coloring. Wear and 3 small tears along center fold, with no loss. Some age-toning. A good copy of this attractive, early map of the South Pole.                                                             $1,650.00

2)       (England) Jansson, Jan, Holy Iland; with Garnsey, Farne, Iarsey. Amsterdam: c. 1645. 41x51 cm. Four maps of Channel Islands on one sheet. Good condition, age-toned. Original outline color. Each map has a colored title cartouche and scale. Verso text is in French. It is from this verso text that the source of the map was determined. There is no imprint or attribution of any sort on the face of the map.  $600.00

3)       (Panama) Blaeu, Guillemus, Terra Firma et Novum Regnum Granatense. Amsterdam: c. 1650. 38x49 cm. A good copy of this early map of Panama and Colombia. Original full color. Mild age toning and very light water stain at top right. Van der Krogt (Atlantes) 9810:2:2         $950.00

4)       (Jamaica) Visscher, Nicholas, Jamaica, Americae Septentrionalis Ampla Insula. Amsterdam: 1680. 52x60 cm. Map of Jamaica in very good condition. Light age-toning. Trimmed fairly close at margins. Outline color by precinct. Quite decorative. This is among the best 17th century maps of Jamaica.    $850.00

5)       (Italy) Valk, G., Area et Alea Belli, Hinc Caesaris, Illinc Hispaniarum et Gallorum Regum. Amsterdam: c. 1680. 66.4x96 cm. Large map, with three vertical and one horizontal folds, of southern Europe. Several short tears, the longest of which is 7 cm. into the Mediterranean Sea at the bottom. No loss of text. Bright full color. Shows from Lake Geneva in the northwest to Nice in the southwest, to the Gulf of Venice in the east. A fine, very scarce, map of the area in which Caesar fought most of his battles.    $1,500.00

7)       (South America) Buache, Philippe, Carte de la Partie de l'Ocean. Paris: 1737. 51x48 cm. Colored in outline. Map of the ocean between Africa and South America including a large plan of the Island of Fernand de Noronha off the coast of Brazil.             $350.00

9)       (Japan) de Vaugondy, Robert, Le Japon. Paris: 1749. 16x16 cm. Map from the Atlas Portatif. Fine condition, wide margins, outline color. Printed on blue tined verge paper.            $400.00

10)     (World) Doppelmayr, J. G., Basis Geographiae Recentioris Astronomica. Nuremburg: c. 1750. 56x46 cm. Map of the world with latitude and longitude of the principal cities. Superb original color, heightened with gold. This was among the last maps to show California as an island.      $1,850.00

11)    (Africa) Bolton, Solomon, Africa, Performed by the Sr. D'Anville under the Patronage of the Duke of Orleans. London: 1755. 100x97 cm. Four sheets joined into two sections. Fine condition. Outline color. A wonderful large 18th century map of Africa which demonstrates the considerable lack of knowledge of most areas of the continent not immediately along the coast.                $850.00

16)    (South America) D'Anville,Sieur, South America. Performed under the Patronage.... London: 1755. 114x76 cm. Uncolored map of the whole continent of South America, for Bolton, from Postlethwait's Dictionary. In three sheets, unjoined. This was as accurate a map of South America as existed at the time.      $775.00

17)    (Spain) Michelot, The Coast of Spain from Cape St. Martin to Cap St. Sebastian with the Islands of Majorca, Minorca & Yuica. London: c.1755. 42x53 cm. Attractive map of the eastern coast of Spain, featuring the islands of Majorca, Minorca and Yuica. Full contemporary (?) hand color. Large inset map of Port Mahon on Minorca. This issue of the map was printed and sold by Mount & Page.         $750.00

Bright, colorful map with three separate plans: of Louisbourg Harbor, of Quebec City, and of Halifax. Bright, fresh contemporary full color.         $1,750.00

19)    (New Orleans) Jefferys, Thomas, Plan of New Orleans, Capitol of Louisiana. London: 1759. 44x34 cm. Uncolored. Upper left corner defective, with damage to the border at the left side. Trimmed very close at the top border. The map is divided into 3 sections: New Orleans, Baygoulas-the sea, the mouth of the Mississippi River.        $1,350.00

20)    (North America) Bolton, Solomon, North America. Performed under the Patronage of Louis Duke of Orleans, First Prince of the Blood, by the Sieur D'Anville. London: c. 1765. 83x83 cm. Excellent condition, light isolated foxing, minor separations at some fold junctions, some discoloration from glue joining sheets. In 2 sections (north and south). From Postlethwait's Dictionary. Hand-colored in outline. Text indicates geographic changes brought about by the Treaty of 1763.         $1,750.00

21)     (New England) Jeffreys, Thomas, Map of the Most Inhabited Part of New England, Containing .... London: 1774. 103.5x98.4 cm. Framed, mounted on a board. 4 sheets joined, top margin of bottom sheets trimmed. Light wear in western Massachusetts near bottom of the top left sheet. Dated November 29, 1774. A good copy of one of the great 18th century maps of New England. Full color in Vermont, outline color throughout. Uniform age-toning throughout. Stevens & Tree 33(d).               $7,500.00

23)    (Canada) Jeffreys, Thomas, General Chart of the Island of Newfoundland. London: 1775. 54x56 cm. Very good copy of this map from the Jefferys American Atlas. Outline color. Some soiling to the top and bottom margins which are cropped very close as usual for this map. Wear and small loss at bottom right border. Features Newfoundland, but also shows the southeastern coast of Labrador.  $800.00

24)     (Pennsylvania) Sayer, Robert & Bennett, John, A Map of Pennsylvania, Exhibiting Not Only the Improved Part ... London: 1775. 133.3x68.6 cm. 3 sheet map, backed and joined. Some damage and loss, repaired at edges, lower right corner defective, affecting border and some surface, but not the text. Outline color. An important map in the history of Pennsylvania. In spite of the small defects, this is a good copy of what is becoming a scarce Revolutionary War-era map of Pennsylvania taken from the great Jeffreys American Atlas, probably the most important 18th century atlas of what would become the United States.        $4,750.00

25)    (Pacific Ocean) Bowles, Carrington, New Pocket Map of the Discoveries Made by the Russians. London: [1780]. 62x45 cm. Full color. Light offsetting and foxing. Shows Siberia and Northwestern North America to Hudson Bay. A quite scarce, attractive, and early map of eastern Russia, Alaska and northwestern Canada. Wagner 597.       $1,250.00

26)     (North America) Sayer & Bennett, A New Map of North America. London: 1783. 117x102 cm.  Large 2 sheet map. Some repairs, good to very good condition. One tear along the rightmost vertical fold in top sheet, light damage at bottom of map, mostly confined to bottom margin, though there is one small hole in the bottom border. This is Stevens & Tree 49(i-k) except that there is no imprint line at the bottom right to ascertain the exact issue. All mentions of the 1763 Treaty of Paris have been removed, however and the name United States appears in both the title and on the map.                $4,000.00

London: 1786. 118x103.5 cm. Outline color. A very large map in 2 sheets, from Jeffreys American Atlas. Inset map of Hudson Bay. Among the decorative features is a large, very elaborate cartouche with an alligator basking the in the foreground. Stevens & Tree 3(e). $2,250.00

31)    (Asia) Sayer, Robert, Asia and Its Islands According to D'Anville. London: 1787. 120x104 cm. Outline color. 2 sheets, not joined. Light toning. A fine large map of the whole continent of Asia, from the Arctic Ocean to the East Indies and the Middle East. $850.00

32)    (France) de Belleyme, M., Carte de la France, Divisee en 85 Departements et Subdivisee en Districts ... Presentee a L'Assemblee Nationale. Paris: 1791. 116x160 cm. Folding map, backed by original linen and dissected, with linen torn along some folds. No slipcase. The map itself is colored in outline by district and is in very good  condition with uniform age-toning. This is apparently the first large-scale maps of France produced by the National Assembly after the French Revolution. Contains a large decorative cartouche with symbols of the Revolution. In spite of this, de Belleyme's imprint line at the bottom identifies him as Geographer to the King.                          $1,350.00

Good condition, though with two thick darkened bands: across the center and bottom. Shows towns, counties, roads, mills. Relief by hachures. Engraved by Benjamin Tanner. 34)     (Switzerland) Weiss, F., Nouvelle Carte Hydrographique et Routiere de la Suisse. Strasbourg: 1800. 56x85 cm. Folding map, Folding map, bound into contemporary paper wrappers designed for a completely different work on Switzerland. Hand color. Very good condition, with one torn segment, no loss, near top left. An attractive, detailed map of Switzerland, with elevations by hachures.  $375.00

Dissected and mounted on linen. A large map of London and Westminster, from Hyde Park in the west to Stepney Road in the east, Islingtonin the north to Greenwich Road. Parks and squares are shown in full color, the limits of the city in outline. Darlington & Howgego 227.                   $650.00

36)    (London) Wallis, J., Wallis's Plan of Cities of London & Westminster. London: 1805. 59x31 cm. Folding map in original slipcase with printed label. Dissected and mounted on linen. The map shows London and Westminster, from Edgeware Road and Chelsea Common in the west to Stepney Green in the east. Outline and partial full color, street guide. Darlington & Howgego 217.      $650.00

37)    (Connecticut) Lyon, William, A Plan of the Town of New Haven, With All of the Buildings in 1748. New Haven: 1806. 49.4x67 cm. Very scarce early map of New Haven in fair condition. Identifies all landowners of 1748, with their houses and occupations. Published by Thomas Kensett. Modern repairs, though with minor loss from chipping. Age-toning. This is among the earliest printed American city plans showing  specific buildings and land owners. Most of the other city maps of this early period showed only streets.     $3,500.00

38)    (Paris) Jean, Cartes des Environs de Paris Divises en Departements, Prefectures et Sous Prefectures. Paris: 1807. 52x75 cm. Folding map of the area around Paris. Original plain boards with printed paper label. Outline color. Excellent condition. Library stamp on inside of boards, but not on map. Shows from Chartres in the southwest to beyond Neuilly St. Front in the northeast, Fontainebleau in the south. A very attractive map of Paris during Napoleon's reign.   $450.00

39)     (Philadelphia) Paxton, John A., To the Citizens of Philadelphia, This New Plan of the City and its Environs ... Is Respectfully Dedicated. Philadelphia: 1811. 48x50 cm. A wonderful map of Philadelphia bound in Paxson's Alphabetical List of the Ward, Streets, Roads ... of Philadelphia. The text is 56 pp. Outline color. Generally very good condition, with 2 short tears. Modern 1/2 cloth with marbled boards. The map here is significantly larger than the maps typically found in city directories and features, in excellent detail, the downtown area between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Though we are listing this as a map, it can also be construed as a city directory and is listed as such in Spear, p. 278.                          $1,750.00

40)    (New York State) Lay, Amos, Map of the Northern Part of the State of New York. Newark, NJ: 1812. 76x126 cm. Large, separately published map in good condition. Original outline color. Modern archival backing. Light chipping at some previous fold junctions, with small loss mostly confined to areas in Lake Ontario and Washington County. This is a very attractive early map of the northern reaches of New York State, engraved by Peter Maverick, of the noted Maverick family of engravers. It is not clear whether this is the first or second issue of this map. Buffaloe (sic) is shown, one of its earliest appearances on a map. Streeter 898, 899.                                          $3,500.00

41)    (World) Pinkerton, John, Northern Hemisphere. London: 1812. 48 cm. diameter.  Original full color. Circular format map, from Pinkerton's Modern Atlas, utilizing a polar projection. Minor soiling and closely  trimmed at lower margin. On both this and the following map, the only information derived from the Lewis and Clark expedition is on the course of the Missouri River. This information is dated 1806. There is no topographical information from the expedition about the Northwest or the Columbia River.            $475.00

42)    (World) Pinkerton, John, Southern Hemisphere. London: 1812. 48 cm. diam. Original full color. Circular format map, from Pinkerton's Modern Atlas, utilizing a polar projection. Closely  trimmed at lower margin. Soiled at top edge, not extending onto map surface but including a portion of the title at the top.        $475.00

43)    (World) Pinkerton, John, Western Hemisphere. London: 1812. 48 diam. cm. Original full color by country. Excellent condition. Shows most of Pacific Ocean, including New Zealand but not Australia. Does not reflect Lewis & Clark discoveries in the western United States.           $450.00

44)    (United States) Lewis, Samuel, New and Correct Map of the United States of North America Exhibiting the Counties, Towns, Roads, &c. in Each State. Philadelphia: 1816. 172.7x186.1 cm. This monumental work is a huge early map of the United States, showing to just past the Mississippi River. Original linen and rods. Some damage at 3 places along the left edge, resulting in the elimination of the top of the inset of Lake of the Woods at the top left. There are also two other repairs in the map at the left, affecting a part of the Missouri River and an area west of the Falls of St. Anthony. This very scarce map was the among first of this size to be published in the United States from original plates. Most earlier maps of the United States, by Abraham Bradley, John Norman and others were considerably smaller. Another contemporary wall map, slightly more common and also by Lewis, the Traveller’s Guide, is about ¼ the size of this map. A fine copy of a map almost never seen offered.             $32,500.00

45)    (Austria) Fried, F., Topographische Karte der Umgebungen Wien's nach den Neuesten und Besten Hulfsquellen. Vienna: 1823. 60x78 cm. Dissected folding map, backed with original linen, with original slipcase. Split clean along several folds. Though split into 5 segments, the map is complete. The map surface is in very good condition. Mostly uncolored, though with highlights for cities. The map shows most of Austria, to Eisenstadt in the southeast, Schonberg and Meissau to the northwest.          $400.00

46)    (North America) Tanner, Henry S., America. Philadelphia: 1823. 62x50 cm. Map removed from Tanner's American Atlas. Good condition, stain in top margin, not affecting image. Tear at extreme bottom left margin, not near printed image. Full color by country. Shows North & South America.         $950.00

47)    (World) Tanner, Henry S., The World, on Mercators Projection. Philadelphia: 1823. 62x50 cm. Map removed from Tanner's American Atlas. Good condition, though with a clean split along about 2/3 of the center fold. The blank back has been used to paste down scrap-book items, with no impact on the map surface. Full color by continent. Light discoloration near top. Tracks of major explorers shown in oceans. Tanner’s American Atlas is rightfully considered one of the great monuments of 19th century American cartography, both for its beauty and accuracy.      $1,500.00

48)     (New York State) Hooker, William, Map of the State of New York, with the Latest Improvements. New York: 1825. 41x50 cm. Folding map in original black leather folder with advertising pastedown inside front cover. The map has light staining at the top and bottom edges, separations at fold junctions, tear along one fold. Full color by county. Hooker was noted as a seller of nautical charts and equipment. He also published a series of maps of New York City. This is the first map of New York State by Hooker which we have seen, who published a number of maps of New York City.              $950.00

49)    (United States) Schoyer, Solomon, Map of the United States Drawn from the Most Approved Surveys. Albany: 1826. 41x50 cm. Folding map in  contemporary leather folder, though mismarked with the words “New Hampshire &c.” Fair condition, with long splits along two folds, no loss. Shows the United States to the Rockies, taking in most of Texas. There is a large attractive cartouche of an eagle at left. This map is most likely derived from Anthony Finley's Map of the United States from his General Atlas. Rumsey 2201.               $850.00

50)    (United States) Tanner, Henry, United States of America. Philadelphia: 1829. 127x159 cm. Wall map, backed with modern stiff archival paper. First edition. Repaired and restored, with scattered chipping and cracking. Minor loss. The sheets were taken off linen and rollers, devarnished, and remounted but not rejoined. Now in very good condition. Original full color by state, faded. Tanner’s United States is among the great American maps of the first half of the 19th century. Large inset maps of cities and their vicinities along the left and right sides. This map, like most of this period, extends west just past Arkansas and Missouri. It does not include Texas. Streeter 3835. $3,500.00

51)    (Maryland) Finley, Anthony, Maryland. Philadelphia: c. 1829. 20.5x27.5 cm. Folding map, Very small folding map originally issued in Finley's General Atlas. The map itself is in fair condition, with separations along some folds, and 3 small chips out of the map along the lower horizontal fold and one along the upper horizontal fold. Original full leather binding, interesting as it is imprinted “Maryland. Price 37 1/2 cts.” It is most unusual to see the price of a map printed on the covers.   $275.00

52)    (United States) Mitchell, S. Augustus, Travelers Guide through the United States. Philadelphia: 1832. 16mo cm. Folding map in very good condition, with light soiling and offsetting to the map which has modern archival backing. There are some small repaired holes at fold junctions of chart. The scarce first edition of what proved to be a long-lived series of maps. Issued with with statistical chart bound in, before text accompaniment began in 1836. A separate text with stage and canal routes is quite scarce and is not present here. This is the first wholly original publication by S. Augustus Mitchell, who began map publishing in 1831 selling maps and atlases by Anthony Finley. This first edition of the Travelers Guide is also important as it was probably the first American cartographic work to employ steel engraving. A good copy of a cornerstone map. See Ristow p. 304. 53)    (United States) Mitchell, S. Augustus, Travelers Guide through the United States. Philadelphia: 1833. 43.5x53 cm. Folding map, excellent condition, though chart is detached. Issued with chart, before there was a text accompaniment. Second edition of one of the most popular traveler's guides of the 19th century. Engraved on steel by J. H. Young and D. Haines. Thomson 890.    $1,150.00

54)    (United States) Phelps, Humphrey, Phelps' Map of the United States from the Best Authorities. New York: 1833. 76x104 cm. Wall map with varnish removed, modern linen backing, original rods. Full color by state. Light rubbing in some areas, most noticeable in the inset view of the Capitol Building. A fine copy of a very scarce and attractive map of the United States to the Rocky Mountains (Albequerque and Santa Fe are shown). Shows all of Texas, one of the few maps of this period to do so. Most of the maps of this era show only a small sliver of eastern Texas. This is the first copy of this map we have seen in 15 years. Not in Phillips or Rumsey.                       $4,750.00

55)    (United States) Strong, Ezra, Map of the United States Corrected from the Most Authentic Surveys. Hartford: 1834. 32x50.5 cm. Wall map in fair to good condition, with cracking and  chipping in the northern areas of Missouri Territory above the Black Hills. There is also one chip in Lake Superior/Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Original linen backing, worn, and rods. Full color by state. Extends west as far as the Rocky Mountains, with an inset map of Oregon near the mouth of the Columbia River. Shows almost all of Texas, with the Oregon inset over some of the western areas. The copyright notice indicates that the first issue was by Eleazer Huntington in 1831. $1,000.00

56)    (Boston) Bonner, John (Reissued by George G. Smith), The Town of Boston in New England. Boston: 1835. 58.5x42 cm. This is an early reproduction of Wheat & Brun's third state of this most important early map of Boston. (See Wheat & Brun 226). A small wall map in very good condition, some staining and darkening, one small chip out at top right. Mild age-toning. Original rods and linen backing. The original issue of  this map was published around 1725. While nowhere near as important as the original 18th century issues of this seminal map of Boston, this is nonetheless quite rare (no other copies offered in the last 20 years). Smith’s reissue of the Bonner map was itself reprinted in 1890 and 1966. OCLC lists five copies of this issue.        $1,250.00

The map is very good, with 2 small holes along folds, with slight loss in North Carolina and the inset map of New Orleans. Outline color by state. 16 small inset maps. 53 pp. text. This is the earliest publication we have seen indicating the partnership of Phelps & Ensign, one which survived (with the later participation at various times of Bridgman, Fanning, and Thayer) through the 1850's. The original manuscript version of this map is illustrated in Schwartz & Ehrenberg, at p. 257, with a text description at p. 259. This map was initially prepared by Washington Hood. The map shows the area from the Ocklockonnee River east, and Okefinokee Swamp south to Key Largo and Cape Sable. Repaired and restored. Varnish removed, modern backing. Some wear and age toning. First edition of an important, attractive map of the Eastern United States, up to East Texas. There is also an inset of North America highlighting the Republic of Texas. The border is very ornate with views of cities, wildlife and patriotic themes. The damage at the top includes about 1/5 of the eagle vignette at the center. This map was reprinted several times in the 1840’s and ‘50’s. The first edition, however, is very scarce.     $5,000.00

The third edition of the Greenleaf map of 1828, this one published by Greenleaf's son. It is among the first commercial maps to note the finalized boundary between Maine and Canada which was settled in 1841.  $2,500.00

73)    (United States) Alden, Albert, Alden’s Pictorial Map of the United States of North America. Barre, Ma.: 1845. 104x134 cm. Linen-backed wall map, lacking rods. Good condition, with light age-toning and minimal loss in the border near the bottom and in the view of Niagara Falls. There is also some chipping along a vertical crease which runs throughout the map near its center.First edition (Karrow lists only one other edition, 1847).  This is a map of the United States surrounded by 28 views of cities, monuments, natural wonders, and important buildings. Inset maps of North America, Florida, and Maine. Among the views are a cotton plantation with slaves working the fields and a view of Galveston, Texas. The scenes in the border make this map reminiscent of Mitchell's National Map of 1843, though these scenes are more decorative and interesting than the plans on Mitchell’s map. There is an ornamental border using a seashell motif and an inner border consisting of 91 flags of the world (including Texas), fully colored. There is an area of modern restoration in the border at the top left, including a very small portion of the inset of the Pearmain (Apple) Tree. Land owners are identified, as are large factory and religious establishments and public institutions. This was the most  ambitious map of Hartford to date, with the only other 19th century large scale map of the city, by St. John & Goodwin in 1824, was about 1/4 the size of this map. Monk moved from Cincinnati to Baltimore prior to publishing this map. The Rio Grande boundary is wrong but corrected in later editions. Linen-backed. Fair condition, with significant chipping near top and some loss in Oregon Territory.  Monk was never noted for his accuracy (See Wheat 757 and 794) or the currency of his geography, but the visual impact of this series of maps is indisputable.     $1,000.00
