(Virginia/Maryland)
Paterson, J. T., Map of Virginia, Maryland & c. Seat of War, Compiled from the
Latest Maps, 1861. Richmond: 1861. 44x56 cm. Folding map in original black
unprinted stiff wrappers, creased vertically. Confederate imprint map of
Virginia, lacking two segments (22x8.5 cm.) at the lower right side which would
show the Peninsula and lower Chesapeake Bay. The map should have 24 (roughly
11x8.5 cm.) segments. Full color. A defective copy of a very scarce map of
Virginia and Maryland. Lithographed by Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond. The map
also shows other wear, with separations at fold junctions and minor loss. Most
interesting, though, is the inscription inside thefront cover, showing that
this copy belonged to “Jas. E. Mclane, Private in Co. C 14th Va
Regt. Armisteads Brigade,
Picketts
Division, First Army Corps, (last line not clear)” This inscription can be
dated somewhere between November 1862, when Pickett took over the 14th Va. to
July 3, 1863 when Armistead died at Gettysburg in Pickett's Charge. Given Armistead's
place in this charge, it is likely the 14th Va (The Fluvanna Guard) was nearby
and suffered great losses at the Bloody Angle. In spite of its condition, this
is an extremely scarce, early Confederate imprint. Stephenson 451.4 $1,750.00

(United States) Johnson & Browning, New
Illustrated & Embellished ... Map of Republic. New York: 1861. 177x165
cm. Large wall map, not in Wheat, though similar in content to the smaller
Wheat 978. Denotes the proposed State of Jefferson or Colona for a Colorado
which is shown in its modern shape. Age toned throughout, with very small chips
near the top, significant area out of border only at right near the top. Other
interesting boundaries include an east-west line between Arizona and New
Mexico, an early appearance of Nevada which extends into Utah, the territory of
Shoshone in what would become southern Idaho and western Wyoming. The title
block reads “Published by J. H. Colton, 54 William St., New York for Johnson
& Browning, Richmond, VA.” This apparently indicates that the map was
actually printed in New York, though the formal attribution is a bit murky. In
any case, this is among a small handful of 1861 pre-war imprints which clearly
demonstrates one of the last collaborative efforts between businesses in the
North and South. $2,500.00
147) (United States) Lloyd, J.T., Lloyd's American Railroad Map. New York: 1861. 98x128 cm. Wall map in fair to good condition, with some holes at fold junctions, tape repairs and overall wear. This is an early example of this striking railroad map of the United States. Its title was changed shortly after the beginning of the Civil War to include “Showing the Whole Seat of War.” Later issues did not list information for Southern railroads as this does. Modelski 43, Stephenson 14. $1,950.00

198) (New York City) Spielmann & Brush, Certified Copies of Original Maps of Property in New York City, Filed in the Register's Office and Elsewhere.. Hoboken, NJ: 1881. It is arguable whether this comprises a series of maps or a nearly complete atlas, or both. This is an unbound atlas containing 92 (of 93) beautifully lithographed and hand-colored sheets which are copies of late 18th and early 19th century property maps of Manhattan showing colonial or other early land owners and property divisions. Each map is quite large, measuring 66x92 cm. per double-page sheet. There is no binding, and the maps have never been bound, which is what makes this most unusual. Most are in excellent condition, though some of the pages have wear at edges or top corners or light soiling. This includes none of the text pages which accompanied the original atlas. For some reason, the title page information appears at page 154. The maps, which do not appear in any particular geographic order, are very striking and attractive in their appearance, with bold clean lines and bright, eye-catching full color. This atlas is very rare, with OCLC 3055158 locating only 6 copies. In general, never-bound atlases are also particularly rare and desireable. $9,500.00

It may have been published as an advertisement for the larger map. There is a small inset Ward Map of Chicago with near microscopic printing. There is also a small census table at the lower left. While not particularly useful for finding one's way around downtown Chicago, crammed with information as it is, this is nontheless a most interesting survival. $300.00
