Laid down on a board with small margins and some discoloration to the west of the centerfold, otherwise a very good copy. Shows the eastern Mediterranean from Italy to the Indian Ocean, including all of the Arabian Peninsula. $975.00
2) (Germany) Blaeu, Guillemus, Rugia Insula ac Ducatus Accuratissime Descripta. Amsterdam: 1631. 38x49 cm. An attractive map of this German island in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Mecklenburg. Contemporary color, with uncolored coats of arms at the sides. Good condition, with very light stain near bottom of center fold. $325.00
3) (Sweden/Norway) Mercator/Hondius, Tabula Exactissima Regnorum Sueciae et Norvegiae, Nec Non Maris Universi Orientalis .... Amsterdam: c.1633. 44x55.2 cm. A scarce map from the 1633 Mercator/Hondius/Jansson atlas. Bright original color, partially outline, highlights fully colored. German text on back. This map was not included in all editions of the atlas. Shows all of northern Europe, from the northern tip of Holland to western Russia, showing Moscow. $1,250.00

Hydrographica, Tabula. Frankfort: c.1638. 25x36 cm. Uncolored map of the
world with polar projections at the bottom corners. Short tear along center
fold in top margin. The engraver's signature is not present. Beautifully engraved
world map on Mercator's projection. The cartography was closely copied from
Blaeu's world map of 1606. Latin title at top, outside neatline, with German
gothic script title and a notation concerning the discovery of the Americas in
1492 that covers the unknown interior of North America. There is a large
southern continent connected to New Guinea, California is a peninsula, and
there are plenty of open ended waterways in eastern North America. $1,750.00

Uncolored map of Tierra del Fuego, with many fanciful drawings and cartouches scattered throughout the map. Light water stain in margins, minor chipping at bottom edge. An attractive map of the tip of South America. $575.00
6) (Carolinas) Speed, John, A New Description of Carolina. London: 1676. 37x51 cm. Early color, fine condition. From Speed's Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World. A classic early map of the Southeast coast. Very attractive. Oriented with north at the right side. Engraved, as many other Speed maps, by Francis Lamb. Based on the Ogilby/Moxon map of 1672, reflecting the latest information on settlements there. Shows the southeast coast from St. Augustine to Cape Henry, centering on the Carolinas and the Hatteras Banks. Cumming (Southeast) 77. $5,250.00

vignettes. A very scarce and decorative map, with a large inset map of Moscow
and 5 other smaller views. One small triangular chip in surface to the right of
the centerfold towards the bottom. This map is scarce because it appeared in
only one edition of Speed's Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World. $1,750.00

condition, very minor wear at edges of margins. Original color, part outline,
part full. The figures at the sides and small plans along the top are fully
colored. English text on verso from publication in A Prospect of the Most Famous
Parts of the World. First published in 1626 (the date on the map face),
this is the fourth state, sold by Bassett and Chiswell. The first edition was
the first map published in an atlas to show California as an island. Engraved
by Abraham Goos. This is among the most sought and most decorative 17th

A defective copy of an important chart, lacking 14x6 cm area at left side of title and cartouche, including the figure at the left side of the cartouche and several letters in the title. All other areas of map surface are undamaged. Uncolored. A great chart of the coast of New England from Nantucket and Cape Cod to Nova Scotia, with one of the earliest representations of the shoals around Georges Bank. Full early color with very decorative elements (animals, cherubs, etc.) at the corners. One small tear, repaired, near bottom of center fold. Shows California as an island. Published, with a companion map of the Eastern Hemisphere, in Mundus Mirabili, Nuremburg: 1696. McLaughlin 122, Shirley 584 (plate 403). $2,750.00

and South America from Cartes des Itineraires et Voyages Modernes,
joined to make one map. The bottom border of the North America map and north
border of the South America map were removed long ago to allow the merger of
these maps. Margins intact but extremely thin. Full color by region. Light glue
stains near center join. Very attractive, with colored cartouches for each of
the original maps. California is not an island, but the northwest above Cape
Mendocino is just blank. $850.00
12) (North America) Moll, Herman, A New Map of the North Parts of America Claimed by France Under Ye Names of Louisiana, Mississippi, Canada and New France .... London: 1720. 45x90 cm. A fair to poor repaired and rebacked copy of a most attractive map. This copy has some loss at folds and at borders. Outline color. Shows North America from Newfoundland to lower California, with California's northern geography left ambiguous. Inset maps of Annapolis harbor and the Mouth of the Mississippi River. There is also a view of the Indian Fort Sasquesahanok at the top left. Outline color. Published by Moll in 1720 along with the Sommers and “Beaver” maps of North America. While far from pristine, this is nonetheless a very attractive map whose flaws do not significantly detract from its other most interesting points. $2,750.00

some loss along the leftmost of 3 folds. The right fold is also
reinforced. 10 inset maps, fine
cartouches. Outline color. The loss affects a small portion of the cartouche
but is otherwise confined to areas in the Pacific Ocean. This is a very famous,
decorative map, with California as an island, with 10 inset maps of ports and a
large view of a Newfoundland fishery. Wheat 105, Tooley (California as an

[London]: c. 1728. 57x50 cm. Uncolored sea chart showing both sides of the Atlantic, with towns and bays featured on each coast. Many towns, rivers, and other features along all coasts are included. Shows from the norterhn coast of South America to the southern part of the North Sea. Very good condition, with no significant defects. $650.00
15) (Virginia) Homann, Joh. Bapt., Virginia, Marylandia et Carolina in American Septentrionali. Nuremberg: c. 1730. 48.8x58 cm. This is an undetermined state of Homann's classic map of the Mid-Atlantic region. Laid down on stiff cardboard, the margins are trimmed close. Full color in areas named in the title and New Jersey, as well as the cartouche. Far northern and western areas have outline color only. Color appears original, but cartouche color may be later. This copy has the imprint “Cum Privilegio Sac. Caes. Majest.” which, according to Cumming, was added to copies published after 1730. Cumming 156 (plate 46), Papenfuse & Coale, plate 25. $2,000.00

show the apochryphal “Mar
ou
Baye de l'Ouest,” a huge body of water east of the current location of San
Francisco.Wagner (Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America) at p. 158 has
an extensive article on the origins and mapping of this inland sea. The map
centers around the Bering Strait, with a substantial part of northern Asia
depicted on the western half of the map. Alaska is essentially unrecognizable,
with a very large “Lac de Valasco” dominating the area where Alaska and Yukon

Shows the towns of Williamsburg and Norfolk and the southern portion of the Delmarva peninsula. The different issues of this map, first published in 1755, are not readily distinguishable. A handsome pair of maps, showing the eastern and western hemispheres, delicately hand-colored with uncolored baroque borders. Light waterstains in top margin of Western Hemisphere map, in side margins of Eastern Hemisphere. Very light scattered foxing. An attractive, very decorative pair of maps. $650.00
23) (Philadelphia) Leizelt, Balth Frederic, Vue de Philadelphie. Augsberg: c. 1776. 33x44 cm. Print, Vue d'optique of Philadelphia. Thin margins, light wear, bottom right corner has a tear, with the loss of a 4.5x2 cm segment including a few letters of the text. Hand-colored fanciful view purported to be the Philadelphia riverfront. There are large, classical design buildings on the right, directly on the river. 3 ships are shown on the water with men in several row boats. This view was actually taken at Greenwich, England. Half of the perspective was used for this view, the other half for a view labeled as a View of New York, both targeted for an audience which had no idea what either city looked like. $650.00

Augsbourg: [1777]. 48.5x59 cm. A fine copy of the eastern part of North America during the American Revolution. No date on map, but datable through references. Shows Canada, Florida,and Fort Duquesne. Full color by state. Shows north to James Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Most of the colonies have very odd boundaries. New Hampshire extends north to the St. Lawrence River just east of Montreal. Gilt highlights. $2,250.00

First edition of this very large 6-part case map of England and Wales, dissected and linen-backed, in original slipcase with bookplate of Richard Lane Freer. The maps have labels of William Faden. Full color by county. A very attractive map. Though also issued in book form, this edition was obviously put together at the time at Faden's shop. $1,250.00
26) (United States) Russell, J., Map of the Middle States of America, Comprehends New-York, New-Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the Territory N.W. of Ohio. London: 1794. 36.5x46.5 cm. Map, Uncolored map of the middle states, showing as far west as the Miami River in what is now western Ohio. Excellent detail. Inset map of Long Island. One unusual geographic feature is that the area which is now West Virginia is labeled Indiana. The Seven Ranges of Townships and many other army lands are identified in Ohio. Also shows most of Maryland. Taken from the London edition of Winterbotham’s History of America. $500.00

28) (Massachusetts) Carleton, Osgood, Map of Massachusetts. Boston: 1801. 4to cm. 4 part map, backed and restored, but still in poor condition overall, stained and chipped, with significant loss, particularly to cartouche. County borders are hand-colored. While the visual appearance of this map is not good due to the loss in the cartouche area, there are only three small areas of notable loss on the map surface, one in the town of Truro on Cape Cod and two in towns in Hampshire County. This map has become one of the most desireable of this period, as have all maps by Carleton. Even defective copies, such as this one, are very scarce. $2,750.00

Map has considerable modern reinforcements along linen folds. Full color. Third edition. Minor chipping along some of the folds. Original marbled slipcase with paper label, sides split with early repairs near
the top. The map has outline color by county. Excellent condition, with light
wear and age-toning. The western section of the state is virtually undeveloped,
with Buffalo and Rochester not yet founded. Genesee County covers the entire
western extremity of the state and has only 3 towns identified. Streeter 893:
“This is apparently one of the earliest separate folding maps of New York after
it became a state.” Very scarce. Not in Phillips. $3,750.00

Southern Part of the State of New York Including Long Island, the Sound, the
State of Connecticut .... New York: 1815. 58.8x71.2 cm. Wall map,
linen-backed, lacking rollers. Very well worn but still quite intact and
legible, with heavy age-toning and oxidation of coloring in Long Island Sound
and the Atlantic Ocean. Outline color by county, all towns delineated. One
small chip out of the bottom border and another very small area of loss in the
town of East Windsor, east of Hartford. A fair copy only of the first issue
(with the designation of Damerum as General Surveyor) of a scarce and important
map of Connecticut and Long Island. Thompson 57. $4,250.00

Folding map, Dissected and backed by linen, crudely repaired in some places, split and nearly detached along several folds. Shows northern Egypt and the Upper Nile above Aswan, with an inset map of a stretch below that. Cairo and Suez are at the northern edge of the maps. The western portion of the Sinai is shown. Uncolored. Very good detail along the river, with less in the outlying desert areas. Text describes the canals and roads of the area. $650.00

Uncolored, excellent condition. Though dated 1816, the atlas was not published
until 1824. A very scarce map by one of America's great cartographers. 2 rubber
stamps on the face (one in the title block, the other in the bottom margin)
with the designation “Skand: Selskab.”. Shows the region from Cincinnati and
all of Lake Michigan in the south and west to Labrador and the southern tip of
James's Bay in the north and east. See Karpinski 41, Phillips (Atlas) 1375. $1,250.00

1818. 40.2x49 cm. Fully colored map from the Rees Encyclopedia, the first issue
of Melish's famous map, which was notably reissued in the Lavoisne atlas of
1821. Wear and small splits along some previous folds. Extends to the Rocky
Mountains and just beyond, with a large, partially delineated Texas. Outline
color by state. Published by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. and engraved by
Samuel Harrison. This isssue does not include Castle Rock and James Peak which
were added after the Long Expedition of 1819-20. Wheat (Transmississippi) 327. $1,000.00
35) (India) Arrowsmith, Aaron, Sketch of the Outline and Principal River of India. London: 1822. 82x63 cm. Case map, dissected and backed with linen, worn along several folds. Original plain slipcase with paper label in very good condition. Full color designating political control of the area. (red for British, control, green for independent, yellow British influence) Thousands of towns and villages are identified. A very useful map of the subcontinent around the height of the British period, showing from the Himalaya Mountains south. $750.00
36) (Ohio) Howard, Joseph, Map of the District of Delaware in Ohio. Delaware, OH: 1824. 60x41.7 cm. Fourth edition of an important map for the promotion of land sales in Northwestern Ohio, showing lot numbers as laid out in rectangular grids. Restored and lined. Defective, lacking a triangular section at the top right corner, resulting the loss of the word “Erie” in Lake Erie and a very small area of land at the eastern end of the peninsula above Sandusky Bay. There are no known copies of either of the first two editions of this map. The third edition (Siebert Sale I 376) was also issued in 1824. OCLC shows one copy of the third edition (DLC) and none of the fourth. Smith (Mapping of Ohio) p. 143 identifies a copy of the fourth edition at the Ohio Historical Society. An important map reflecting the development of Ohio in the early part of the 19th century. Not found in Printed Maps of the Midwest. Streeter 1862. $4,250.00

Collot's Journey in North America ... A fine copy of this, the first map
showing the layout of the town and surrounding country, in the southeastern
part of Missouri along the Mississippi River. All maps from Collot are rare. $1,250.00
38) (North America) Collot, Georges H.V., General Map of North America. Paris: 1824-26. 45x84 cm. Map from Collot's Journey in North America ... Good condition, with some splitting along some folds but no loss. Published from a map first drawn around 1804. This is the largest map in Collot’s work, showing the whole continent, with good detail up to the Rockies, which are identified as both the Yellow and Stony Mountains. Includes information from MacKenzie, but not from Lewis and Clark. A very scarce, attractive map of North America. Wagner Camp 31a. $8,500.00
39) (United States) Tanner, Henry S., The Traveller's Guide. A Map of the Roads, Canals and Steam Boat Routes. Philadelphia: 1825. 45x56 cm. Folding map, bound in modern red morocco folder. The map is slightly browned and is rebacked. Outline color by state. The map includes all of Louisiana , Missouri and Arkansas. It identifies what later became Iowa as part of the Oregon Territory. There is a large table of distances at the bottom right. The map is very useful as it shows the significant towns of the time and the roads and distances between them. It shows the location of Indian tribes in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. This is among the most important early American maps for travelers, a forerunner of Mitchell's Traveler's Guide series. It might have been the first American traveler's guide in the form of a pure map, as Melish's guides had been booklets with text and a map to accompany. Phillips p.884. $2,500.00

Folding pocket map in original full leather with moderate soiling and wear. The map has modern tissue backing. Outline color by county. This edition of the wonderful New England map from Tanner's American Atlas maintains the beautiful cartouche along the rocky shore which gives this map a special place among maps of New England. $1,750.00
41) (Holy Land) Assheton, J. T., A Historical Map of Palestine, or the Holy Land. Boston: 1828. 100x88.5 cm. Small linen-backed wall map in very good condition, lacking rods, age-toned. Minor tears into top margin, not affecting image. Outline color by tribe. Very decorative, with small vignettes throughout of biblical scenes or passages. Published by T. B. Wait & J. W. Ingraham. Engraved by Annin & Smith. This map, taken from a London production, was reproduced several times, including one as late as 1845 by Mitchell in Philadelphia. $850.00
42) (New York State) Burr, David H., Map of the State of New York and the Surrounding Country, Compiled from his Large Map of the State. Albany: 1829. 49x63 cm. Small wall map in only fair to good condition, with considerable age-toning and light chipping near the top. Lacks bottom rod. The largest of the chips affects an area in western Orange County, eliminating the “RA” of the county name. The map includes all of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont as well as most of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Full color by county in New York, outline color in other states. Profiles of Erie, Seneca, and Champlain Canals at lower left. A scarce map, published in the same year as Burr's great New York State Atlas, and taken from that work as indicated by the small “No. 1” in the top margin. This map was reduced from Burr's much larger wall map of the state published in the same year. $850.00
43) (New York State) Williams, William C., Tourist's Map of the State of New York. Utica: 1829. 50x72 cm. Folding map, Original tooled leather. The map is in excellent condition, though uniformly age-toned. Full color by county. The text is present here on a separate sheet bound into the folder along with the map. At the bottom is a large profile of the Erie Canal. Williams' guide was one of the most popular guides to New York State of the early 19th century. $850.00

General de la Ciudad de Mexico. New York: 1830. 48x53 cm. Exceedingly
scarce pocket map in superb condition. Original red morocco folder with title
gilt on front. Bookplate inside front cover. Crisp full color with many
differentiations of blocks and sections. Engraved by Peter Maverick of the
noted Maverick family of engravers. This is a reduced version of a map first published
in Mexico City in 1793 and reissued as a wall map in 1807. Not mentioned in
Stephens, The Mavericks, which has a listing of known works engraved by
members of the Maverick family. We have not been able to find any other copies
of this map in auction records or dealers’ catalogues for 40 years. Not in

Has limited information for Florida, Michigan, Arkansas, Missouri and Northwest Territories. There is also an estimation of Indians within the United States, broken down by geographic area. Outline color by town. Among the 10 inset maps is one of the Continuation of the Boston, Norwich & New London Railroad which is described by Thompson as the earliest charting of a Connecticut railroad. This is the earliest Connecticut county map listed by Thompson and among the earliest of any New England counties. The map is exceedingly well done, with the drawing and the engraving of the highest quality for the period. It is rare - the only reference found was in Thompson’s listing. Not in Phillips. Original full leather folder, front cover detached, scuffed. The map has outline color, short split along one fold, separations at some fold junctions. Very good condition. 7 inset maps with areas around major cities. Ristow, p. 315, mentions this as the first year of publication for Colton, but does not mention this map. A very attractive, important early map from two of the greatest names in American cartography, Colton and Burr. It is interesting that Chicago is not named on this map, though it had been on maps 20 years earlier. Wisconsin Territory has been separated from “Missouri or Northwest Territory” an unusual conflating of two distinct territories. $2,500.00

Full color by state, excellent condition with some separations at fold junctions. This is similar to Mitchell’s 1833 Traveller’s Guide, with a single sheet map of the United States (taken from Mitchell’s version of the Finley U.S. map) and a single sheet of steamboat and canal routes, statistics, etc. Much of his information comes from the sheet that accompanies Mitchell's guide. Williams' relationship with Mitchell probably started with this guide and continued into the 1840's when he made other maps for Mitchell, including the Texas map for the 1846 Universal Atlas. The title above is from the front cover of the guide. The map extends west past the Rocky Mountains, identifying Long’s and James’s Peaks as well as the apochryphal River Buenaventura. Texas is named only as the area along the Gulf Coast of eastern Mexico from Galveston to the Sabine River. Streeter 3847. $1,750.00

A delicately hand-drawn map of lands in North Carolina which were the site of gold mining operations in the 1830's. The area shown is near Ashboro, North Carolina, west of the Deep River and just north of Richland Creek, likely in Randolph County. Excellent condition, with one small area of damage in a completely blank area to the left of the title. The areas shown are greatly detailed, with individual buildings clearly labeled and the path of the veins for mining outlined in red. 10 such veins are shown. Also included is a contemporary note which accompanied the map when it was sent to an investor in Pennsylania. $2,250.00

A very good copyof a most important map, according to Wagner-Camp 70 “the earliest ... which contains reliable information as to the interior of the Oregon Territory.” Wheat 438 : “A real advance” and “A notable achievement.” There are minor differences between this copy and the one illustrated in Wheat v. 2, page 166. $350.00

This is a very scarce pocket map and chart showing Wisconsin in its earliest years. The map was engraved by J. H. Young and published by Augustus Mitchell. Graff 4: “Abel's map and broadside comprise one of the first few works containing reliable information about the northern part of the Old Northwest Territory.” A very important, quite scarce, map of the late development of the Old Northwest, the destination of much of the early westward migration in the United States. 60) (United States) Phelps & Ensign, Travellers Guide and Map of the United States. New York: 1839. 66x103 cm. Small wall map, lacking rods. Generally good condition, though with some creasing and cracking, particularly near the top. Age-toning, light staining. A likely candidate for restoration. This map shows the Republic of Texas north of Galveston. Extends well west into New Mexico, whose eastern boundary is right up against San Antonio. This is an earlier edition of this map than we have seen before, with a copyright notice dated 1837. Many, many differences from the more frequently seen 1841 issue (below), the most striking of which is that the bottom has, along with small historical scenes, facsimile signatures from the Declaration of Independence in place of a view of the signing. The five historical scenes at the bottom, while of the same subjects, have been completely reengraved. There are also many geographical differences from the later issues, including a large number in Texas. Of course, the presidential portraits at the bottom corners do not include Harrison, elected in 1840, who appears on the 1841 issue, nor Tyler, who appears on the 1843 and later issues. We have never seen a copy of an 1837 edition of this wall map. A rare issue of a popular map of the period. $2,000.00

A semi-circular timeline runs clockwise at the border, from 1492 at the left to 1845 at the bottom right. The branches go out to the point in time at which the depicted event occured. There are 4 east-west and 2 north-south streets shown and 42 different lots are numbered. The identification and attestation of the maker is written on the back of the brown paper on which it is drawn. $750.00

A fair to good copy of Preuss's classic 7-part map of the route of Captain Fremont from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean, one of the great landmarks in American cartography. The maps are bound at the right side. Some repairs and restoration, with early tape repair marks still showing at points along a previous center fold, with some discoloration. Housed in a modern full cloth case. Wheat 523 devotes 4 pages and 7 illustrations to this most important work. Wheat effuses over this map, calling it “a road guide for Oregon emigrants such as had never previously existed.” $5,500.00

There are idealized views of the Eastern and Western Hemisphere and an ornate decorative border. There are idealized vignettes of a native for four continents: America, Europe, Asia and Africa. An unusual, very small pair of folding maps in the original tiny (8.2x5.4 cm.) stamped cloth cloth folder with black gilt-printed paper labels front and back. The front label reads “Map of Boston” while the back reads “Map of Boston & Vicinity.” One map, named above, is of the city proper; the second map is Map of the Vicinity of Boston, 1849. Both are uncolored and have some splits along folds and at fold junctions, with very minor loss. The map of the vicinity of Boston has early crude repairs along two short folds and one diagonal repaired tear running from Billerica to West Cambridge. $500.00

Small folding map, lacking front wrapper and stained, used as a promotion for a possible trans-continental railroad. Outline color, holes at many fold junctions. There is an inset map across most of the top by W. L. Dearborn, of a route for a proposed railroad from St. Louis to San Francisco. Clearly designed to capitalize on the Gold Rush. Published by John Haven, who did other promotional maps around this time to arouse interest in a trans-continental railroad. “Mormon City” is located just south of the Great Salt Lake, and early appearance of Salt Lake City which was founded in 1847. $850.00
