3)       Avery, B. F., & Sons, Plows - 1878-79. Louisville, KY: 1878. 64 pp., 12mo. Priced and illustrated catalogue of plows from a manufacturer in Louisville. Excellent condition. There is a list of branch offices, located mostly through the South. See Romaine p.2 for an 1899 catalogue from this company.        $150.00

4)       Avery, B. F., & Sons, Illustrated Catalogue and Price-List of Plows and Cultivating Implements. Louisville, KY: 1882. 38 pp., 8vo. Many fine woodcut illustrations of plows and similar equipment. Also has a poem by Will Carleton, “Song of the Plow,” written especially for Avery. 5)       Bain, James M., Directions for Making and Using the Improved Common Sense Incubator. Zanesville, Oh: 1884. 26 pp., 12mo. Paper wrappers, excellent condition. This entire pamphlet devoted to problems of incubating and raising chickens and eggs for market. Sections are devoted to feeding, diseases of chickens, building chicken coops and other facets of the business. $40.00

6)       Baker, H. J., & Bros., Season of 1890 - Facts For Farmers,  Fertilizers. Brooklyn, NY: 1890. 56 pp., oblong 8vo. The wrappers are stiff textured boards and illustrated with a view of the factory in Brooklyn. The company's offices were on Pearl St. in New York. The text offers fertilizers especially blended for use on various crops. A page lists 20 different products such as asparagus manure, onion manure, etc.           $75.00

7)       Buffalo Fertiizer and Chemical Works, Honest Fertilizers - Ammoniated Bone Super-Phosphate and Pure Ground Bone. Buffalo, NY: 1882. 24 pp., 8vo. Descriptions of the fertilizers are given along with directions for their use. These were the fertilizers in use before the devlopment of synthetic products. Much of the text consists of testamonials. There is an 1882 calendar inside the back cover.    $50.00

Well-illustrated with the machines from which they take the company takes its name. Most are designed for home lawns and gardens, others for commerical greenhouses and similar uses. The last page lists some prominent customers. These include John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Mellon, Henry Ford, Alfred DuPont, J. P. Morgan and some of the major seed producers.        $125.00

33)    Vermont Farm Machine Co., Improved United States Separator. Bellows Falls, VT: 1903. 40 pp., 8vo. Tall fold-out catalogue mostly devoted to machines used by the dairy industry. Cream separators, butter printers and similar machines are illustrated. 34)    Cleveland Faucet Co., The, Beer Pump Makers. Cleveland, OH: 1897. 28 pp., 8vo. Illustrated paper wrappers. The text and illustrations are all printed in red and blue. This is a catalogue of beer pumps with extensive illustrations of different models. There are also cocktail recipe inlcuded. On page 3 is the signature, in pencil, of world heavyweight boxing champion James J. Corbett. His signature appears on the same page as The Jumbo Champion beer pump. A scarce autograph on an unusual catalogue.                                              $600.00

35)    Duffy Malt Whiskey Co., Shall We Fly?. Rochester, NY: 1909. 15 pp., 12mo. This pamphlet describes the beginnings of man's quest for flight while extolling the virtues of malt whiskey as a medicine. e.g. "Pneumonia Requires Prompt Action - Take Duffy's at Once!" An interesting and unusual combination with several color illustrations. The front cover shows a person reminiscent of Peter Pan flying     $60.00

36)    Frank, Wally, Ltd., Pipe Lore Being a Polite Repository of Interesting and Useful Information on Fine Pipes and Tobaccos. New York, NY: 1935. 20 pp., oblong 8vo. Though styled as  a magazine, this is in fact a catalogue for this pipe shop, with illustrated offerings of pipes, tobacco, etc.        $30.00

37)    Kline, W. L. Co., Fine Cigars. St. Louis, MO: 1897. 6 pp., oblong 8vo. Material sent to a prospective saleman with prices of cigars, a circular describing the "Little Salesman Cigar Selling Machine" and 2 form letters on illustrated company letterhead. An unusual archive of introductory materials for a cigar salesman.        $85.00

38)    Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co., Catalogue of Presents Offered for Tobacco Tags, Tobacco Coupons and Cigarette Coupons. St. Louis, MO: 1916. 52 pp., 8vo. Fair condition, lacking back wrapper and with small damage at the bottom of the first few leaves. Catalogue of premiums for trading in coupons which were given away in packs of cigarettes. Many clothes and households goods, but also such items as safes, furniture and musical instruments. The last page offers 2 different Indian motorcycles, along with a sidecar.     $50.00

39)    Moerlein's Beer Co., Eat Drink and Be Merry. Cincinnati, OH: c. 1882. 12 pp., 16mo. 12 fine color lithographic pages praise Moerlein's Beer in verse. The characters illustrated range from Shakespearean to a Pullman porter. A fine example of early beer advertising.                $250.00

40)    Orient Cigarette Co., Price List, 1925-26. Cairo, EG: 1925. 8 pp., 12mo. A very attractive little booklet promoting cigarettes. Beautifully colored, the left-hand pages show scenes in Egypt and the ancient world, while the right side show packages of 3 brands of Orient Cigarettes: Kefir, Obelisk, and Sambul. Printed in London by Tillotsons.                                                           $140.00

41)    Zoller, Charles, Catalogue 1891. New York, NY: 1891. 344 pp., 8vo. No title page, spine lightly soiled, one page has a corner off. Illustrated. Everything needed for brewering from mallets and candlesticks to enormous mash tubs and malt mills. Perhaps the most unusual item is a pair of shoes for maltsers who required to stomp around in the malt suds. The items required for each division of a brewery are grouped together: cooperage, bottling, corkage, etc. Not in Romaine.                                                                                   $375.00

This is an attempt by the Architects of America to give the public a practical demonstration of what was necessary to build a better home. Blue prints and text reflect the ideas and methods of America's leadng architects.                                                             $50.00

46)     Boughton, J. W., Interior Decorations & Artistic Wood Floors. Philadelphia, PA: 1893. 46 pp., 8vo. Illustrated wrappers. Damage to bottom 1/3 of spine throughout, with no loss of printed area. Illustrated in color throughout. with samples of parquet and other decorative floor patterns for homes. Very bright and attractive. Priced. An excellent guide for high-end decorative wood floors of the period.   $300.00

47)     Burrowes, E. T., Co., Wire Screens. Portland, ME: 1892. 18 pp., 8vo. Both front and back covers have beautiful color lithographic scenes. The back cover has a remarkable lawn tennis scene with two fine Victorian houses in the background. The text has many illustrations of the screens for doors and windows and some places they have been installed, including P. T. Barnum's home. Many testamonials, including ones from Barnum and Robert T. Lincoln. Romaine p.27.        $275.00

53)     General Bronze Corp., Distinctive Productions in All Metals. Long Island Cit, NY: c. 1931. 16 pp., 4to. A spectacular portfolio of 16 sheets each illustrating a building element designed by the company. These include elaborate Art Deco building entrances, elevators, desks and windows. All of the areas shown are works of architectural art. Most of the buildings identified are in New York and Ohio.             $275.00

54)     General Concrete Construction Co., Concrete Chimneys. Chicago, IL: 1912. 38 pp., 8vo. Illustrated catalogue of chimneys for factories, with many photographs of finished chimneys in place. The center illustration shows the Standard Oil plant in Whiting Indiana. Features mahogany, but also includes oak, pine, maple elm and ash. There is no date, and thus no way to determine which this was issued before or after the earthquake, though it is certainly from that time period.   $100.00

Hard covered catalogue of decorative brickwork, ceilings, friezes, columns and caps and other plaster ornamentation. Fully illustrated, with prices. Includes some small gargoyles, faces, scenes, shields, grilles and other small exterior decorative elements. 67)     Rice & Co., Lowell Wire Cloth Manufactory. Lowell, MA: c. 1880. 1 pp., folio. Display board, with original wooden frame, for wire cloth, with 12 (of 15) original samples of wire mesh attached. Some soiling and staining. The samples include a wide variety of gauges, from relatively fine screen mesh to chicken wire with large gaps between the strands. A remarkable survival, with each mesh identified by gauge and wire thickness.          $450.00

This is a great reminder of the days when routes were posted on telegraph poles and were identified by their color. 99)    Daimler Motor Co., Marine Catalogue - Gasoline Motors for Street Railways, Boats, Carriages, Quadricycles, Fire Engines & Vehicles of All Kinds. Long Island Cit, NY: 1893. 40 pp., oblong 8vo. While this is exclusively a marine catalogue, the fact that it is a very early Daimler production, mentioning in the title the application of gasoline motors for carriages and fire engines, places it among the automobiles. Not a catalogue, but an interesting dissertation on automobile construction by one of the most important pioneers in the industry. Duryea goes system-by-system describing his cars and the engineering which went into them. A fascinating early automotive piece.   $125.00

102) Emblem Mfg. Co., Emblem Motorcycles. Angola, NY: 1912. 16 pp., oblong 8vo. An early motorcycle catalogue offering four different models, and many views of component systems. Original wrappers, with small chips in front wrapper and title page, light soiling to about half of the leaves. This catalogue was from Emblem's third year in business, which ran until 1925. It was one of the most popular early makes of motorcycle, noted for their quality and innovative features.        $550.00

An early motorcycle catalogue featuring both cycles and parts. The motorcycles are all motorized bicycles, with pedals and chains, though there is no doubt that they were designed and built as motorcycles. A fascinating catalogue of early commercial vehicles, consisting primarily of trucks, but also showing buses and delivery cars. The company would construct special order bodies to affix to standard chassis, so that the vehicles could be adapted for most any heavy-duty use, including fire engine. The text is pitched directly at small businesses, touting the increased business opportunity and efficiency of investing in a motorized truck.                         $500.00

Descriptive brochure, illustrated with uncolored photos, of the entire Stutz line, including sedans, cabriolets and the famous Bearcat. The company boasts of its support from Wall Street bankers, including Charles M. Schwab, the steel magnate who was at this very time in the process of going bankrupt. A sample card measuring 6.4x3 inches on which are mounted 20 small metal devices for decorating hats, purses or other accessories. The card is heavily creased and nearly split horizontally at the center. The devices are silver or gilt. An unusual survival, as sample cards like this rarely survived with all of their samples intact.   $65.00

246)  Gordon & Ferguson, Gordon Furs. St. Paul, MN: 1912. 44 pp., 4to. Cardboard wrappers. Fur coats, muffs and many other fur garments are illustrated. A small section is devoted to a description of the names used to describe a fur and the actual animal from which it came is given. Example: Sheared and dyed muskrat becomes Hudson Seal. There are 20 other similar misleading names used. $50.00

247)  Gunther, C. G., Sons, Furriers. New York, NY: 1893. 58 pp., 8vo. Not strictly a catalogue. Gunther, a well known furrier, uses the descriptions of 48 animals to let the public know that these animals skins are all available from Gunther in the form of fur coats and other articles of clothing. Condition is good with  light water stains on a few pages. The illustrations of the animals are excellent woodcuts.        $50.00

Materials used in the handles include ivory, sterling silver, gold, gold and pearl, and others. Over 200 different styles are shown. Umbrella or cane handle catalogues are exceeding scarce, particularly ones such as this for higher-end styles utilizing precious metals or stones.         $700.00

251)  Kirk, W. Stokes, Guns, Ammunition Cutlery, Sport and Army Clothing - Catalogue No. 20-B. Philadelphia, PA: c. 1910. 48 pp., 12mo. Illustrated ppaper wrappers. A tiny burn hole appears on the front wrapper. Catalogue offers a small range of inexpensive guns and a wide assortment of military clothing, axes, canteens and other accessories for the out door man. Kirk claims that his father established the first Army-Navy stores in the United States.        $50.00

A strange tiny folding catalogue in the form of an envelope which opens to describe the variety of items sold by Sanford. We have never seen anything quite like this. The catalogue consists of 12 panels, not illustrated, listing hosiery, gloves, yarns, perfumes, and other dry goods.  $75.00

264)  Scotch Woolen Mills, Spring & Summer 1928. Chicago, IL: 1928. 50 pp., folio. Oversized catalogue of men's fashions with illustrations of the suit styles (some colored, many uncolored) on the rectos and actual samples of woolen fabrics on the versos. Original red and black cloth binding, the pages are loose in the binding. Many leaves have some wear or staining, though the rear pages are clean. 185 of 197 original fabric samples are present. As the pages are unnumbered, there may be leaves missing. There appears to be one empty tab at the back. Sold as-is. Nonetheless, this is a great display of mens’ fashions from the 1920’s.        $475.00

Includes howitzers, mortars, shore-based naval pieces, ammunition limbers and caissons, and a mobile observation tower. Most interesting, however, is the last piece shown, an armored truck which is an immediate predecessor of the tank. This is a truck with armored plating, with wheels not treads.      $750.00

Small give-away from the Buffalo Pan-American exposition for this meat packer and the Fairbank Canning Co. Apparently, the premiums were the only compensation for the agents who, upon collecting money and sending it in, would choose their premium. Each item including ginger, vanilla and many others is described and instructions given for their best usage. 356)  Siegel, Henry, Co., Food Magazine, Summer Number. Boston, MA: 1907. 80 pp., 4to. This price list has many thousands of items and provides a good view of the diet of wealthy Bostonian families. The Siegel firm was one of Boston's best known grocers for many years. Includes ads for food products. The last page has the poem “Casey at the Bat,” but attributes it to Joseph Quinlan Murphy, not Ernest Thayer. The poem was first published 20 years earlier.        $25.00

Prices are by the pound and many familiar types such as ginger snaps and graham crackers are listed along side now unknown varieties such as Congress Biscuits and Pilot Bread.                                                 $25.00

360)  Tufts, James W., Arctic Soda Water Apparatus. Boston, MA: 1884. 256 pp., 4to. Lacks wrappers. Internally, however, this is still a fine copy and nearly an encyclopedia of early soda fountains. Among the many illustrations are 7 albertype pages with photographic reproductions. Most of the illustrations are woodcuts. The most expensive model is listed at $4,500, an enormous sum for this period. Romaine, p. 153, characterizes the illustrations as “fantastic.”        $675.00
