30)    (Maine) Baker, Nathan , Manuscript Map of the Northern Portion of the District of Maine. 100x76 cm. n.p.: c.1818.An unknown manuscript map of northern Maine, drawn by one of the earliest American settlers in the Madawaska region along the St. John River. While the paper is still strong and the writing clear, there are major areas gone at some fold junctions resulting from damage (most likely deterioration from exposure to water) at a top corner when the map was folded. Still present is a tipped-on extension to the Kennebec River. While the map does not have extensive topographic detail, it is very diligent at showing the rivers and lakes. Shows the area from the River St. Francois and the northern end of the Androscoggin River in the south to the St. John River and many of its branches in the north. Captain Baker came to the St. John River in 1817. Sources differ as to whether his brother John followed shortly thereafter or accompanied Nathan. After Nathan’s death in 1821, John became the leader of the lumbering settlement which was established at the mouth of Meriumpticook Stream (later Baker Brook) which is now in New Brunswick. The Bakers, in particular John Baker, were key protaginists in the Maine/New Brunswick boundary dispute by trying to provoke French inhabitants of the Madawaska region to reject British authority. The authorship of the map is taken from a notation on the reverse of the map “Nathan Baker’s Dist. Maine” Settlers’ maps of any area are rarely available. This one, of northern Maine which was the subject of a long-running dispute between the United States and Great Britain, is a fascinating survival.      $12,500.00
